Somerset Education Association Educators Need Education

Few political activists who regularly attend Somerset County Board of Education public meetings are members of the Somerset County Education Association (SEA). From their public statements and online comments, it appears that they have serious trouble with English language arts, civics, and comprehension. They speak passionately during public comments and that’s how the rest of us know - the educators need education.

They are unaware of the Maryland Education Article or the law that gives the local Board of Education the right to draft local policies like the one about the dress code, the one about student discipline, the one about cell phones, or the policy about the roles of the Board members and their one and only employee - the Superintendent.

In addition to repeating demands (which are not authorized by law) as if the elected representatives would somehow delegate their duty to a non-existent “committee” or take orders from the Superintendent, the ignorant mob decided to hackle and disrupt the Board meeting throwing tantrums over things they know nothing about.

Their public comments show a substantial lack of understanding between a policy and procedure, which a procedure (how a policy is implemented or carried out) is the responsibility of the Superintendent.

We haven't seen any procedures created in the past 12 months. Not a single procedure about anything was drafted by the Superintendent. How difficult can it be to draft a dress code procedure to dress respectfully on school grounds? How difficult can it be to draft a cell phone procedure?

It’s been a year, and the Superintendent and her “team” produced nothing. We have been patiently waiting.

Some procedures are common sense, but not that common to some educators who blame the Board for the responsibility of the Superintendent and hackle the Chairman. They are so ignorant of the fact that the board passes policies, but the Superintendent is supposed to make them applicable to teachers and students.

One of those geniuses complained that the Board members are "not educators and have no clue about education." That way of thinking is typical communist-style "rule by technocrats" who think they know what's in our children's best interests. Those are the same people who claim that there are 67 genders and that the truth is whatever you want it to be based on your feelings.

Thank God for the infinite wisdom of our founding fathers who made decentralized form of government and who gave the power and the trust to the voters and their representatives.

Our decentralized system made checks and balances so that when the so-called "educators" want to change the law by “mob rule," our elected representatives would protect the interests of parents and students.

While the Somerset County Teachers Association represent the Democrat Party and teachers, our local representatives represent students and parents.

While you may be told by the SEA that the "Board is banning books, out to fire staff, or not paying teachers," the reality is very different.

Do not forget that the same staff and some educators are the reason why Somerset County is the worst educational system in Maryland and has been for many years.

Smart citizens know better, and they choose to speak at the ballot box where it counts. This Board will make the changes necessary for Somerset County to rise from the bottom of the education pit. We owe it to our children.
